Brown Bag Project

Our Brown Bag Project provides freshly prepared food for folks on the streets and under bridges. Do Feed PeopleThis is a person-to-person way of connecting with hunger in our community, and reaching out to folks in need. On “Brown Bag Action Days” we usually serve 75 to 100 people.

Lunches include hearty sandwiches, fruits, carrot sticks, other munchies, and cookies. In cold weather, we also serve up hot homemade soup with every lunch. Volunteers prepare the meals and then go out on the city streets and under theHomeless young woman bridges to offer a meal to anyone who might be hungry. In winter, we distribute handmade Hats & Scarves at the same time. And a few times during the  year, we also serve full hot dinners for 100 homeless people at a transitional housing facility. More info on this project is on the Brown Bag Blog site.

Check our Calendar for the next Brown Bag Action Day (usually Tuesdays, once or twice a month). More volunteers are always welcome! Also, donations to support this project are welcome in any amount, and are tax deductible.

Soup and sandwichVolunteer qualifications: A caring heart and a few hours’ time. This is an easy opportunity to engage in compassionate action and extend a friendly hand and a meal to people who are hungry. The need is great, and this program enables us to connect with our own humanity and the  humanity of others in a practical, compassionate way.

No single action will solve the problem of hunger. This program is very modest, but to do nothing because we can’t do “enough” is a zero-sum response. We can take action, and our actions matter. The intention of Brown Bags is to provideBrown Bag Volunteers decent food , friendly interaction, and simple respect to those we meet on the streets. In doing so, we open ourselves to connect with  individuals we might not encounter in our usual daily routines. And every lunch we serve ensures that at least one person will not go hungry that day.

Post a comment below to let us know if you’d like to get involved, or have any thoughts or suggestions for this program!

If you’d like to help but can’t come out on weekday mornings, we welcome your help soliciting food donations. We also urgently welcome financial donations! Even very modest gifts make a difference. Each meal costs $2 to $2.25, so a simple $10 donation provides food for four or five people.  All contributions are tax-deductible.

Online resources offer information on major hunger programs in Oregon, as well as state-by-state, nationally, and globally.  Living Earth’s Brown Bag Project is very small and very local. In some ways it could be likened to the story of the man tossing starfish back into the sea. It is not a wide-scale attack on the causes of hunger, but for 75-100 people out on the streets, it means a decent meal personally offered, extended in friendship. And for the volunteers, it offers an opportunity to explore the contents of our own hearts as we fill bags with food for others.

Hi Betsy, I can offer a bread donation for sandwich making for the Feb 22 Brown Bag- I can pick up free bakery bread on Sunday or Monday nite after 10pm ( as staff for New Seasons) Let me know if this would be helpful, and that I’m not duplicating someone else’s efforts. -Eileen
