Hats & Scarves Winter Warming!

Our Hats & Scarves warming project connects the gentle arts Yarn and knitting needlesof knit and crochet with folks who need help staying warm in winter.

Until January 31, drop-baskets in the locations listed below will welcome new home-made items for folks in need ages 0-110. Nimble fingered folks are invited to make warm items that will be given to people in need throughout our region. The program serves babies and seniors, farm-workers and schoolkids, folks with homes and folks on the streets. Handmade hats and scarves, socks, mittens, shawls, blankets, and baby clothes are welcome.

blue yarn skeinsIn 2008-09, our first year, we collected 250 items. The next year, donations jumped to 665. And in 2010-11, kind-hearted yarn-istas responded with 1,042 beautiful cozy garments! Every piece was a wonderful expression of much-appreciated creative compassion and good will.

Hats & Scarves are given to folks on the street during our Brown Bag food actions, and hundreds more find homes through our community partners: Adelante Mujeres, Blanchet House, Emanuel Children’s Hospital, Friends of Seasonal Workers, Glendoveer Providence Elderplace, IRCO Africa House, Northwest Ministries, and the YWCA Women & Children’s program.

Yarn: A Living Earth volunteer solicited yarn donations for us (Bravo, Abigail!). If you need yarn to make items for our project, or if you can help solicit more donated yarn, contact Bill.

@Kathy
The CAT Thrift Store has been added to the list. Thanks for bringing the omission to my attention.

I can pick up hats ‘n’ scarves at New Seasons in the next week.

I dropped off a large number of Hats & Scarves at the New Seasons yesterday. They no longer have the donation basket out, but an employee assured me they would get to the right person. They were under the impression the collection was over.

I’ll drop by New Seasons 7 Corners in the next few days for a pickup.
