Join us for dharma reflection and dialogue, contemplative practice, and extended silence in the late autumn beauty at Breitenbush. We will explore two specific practices: cultivating the ground of Loving Awareness – our essential nature – and Metta, the practice of lovingkindness, to bring the fullness of the spacious heart into our interactions and relationships.
In three retreat sessions daily, we will explore path of the heart. Betsy Toll will offer dharma talks, and practice will include interaction and silent contemplative periods. Practice sessions will be balanced with personal time to rest, hike, soak, or for yoga, steeping in solitude, or enjoying connection and community.
Sessions will be held in the round wood-and-stone Forest Shelter, located on the upper path near the Sanctuary. Except when in session, we will maintain silence through early afternoon each day. Inquiry and reflection will soften our boundaries and loosen the tangles of our mental habits. Kirtan and chanting opportunities will greet each dawn and close each evening.
All are welcome, whether established in a particular practice or just setting out on the path.

Betsy Toll has been exploring spiritual practice, compassionate service, and conscious social action for more than three decades. A writer and editor, she leads dharma circles, workshops, retreats, and community programs in Portland, and volunteers as a non-sectarian hospital chaplain. She bows to the wisdom of many spiritual traditions, with endless gratitude for Neem Karoli Baba and Ram Dass, who she’s been following on the path of love and service for many years. She also offers deep pranams to Joanna Macy and Catherine Ingram.
